She was seen wearing a yellow and gold silk tunic with matching pants. The 22 years old accessorized this look with a pair of dazzling earrings, rings, bracelets and gold heels.

Considered one of the most striking symbols of beauty, ao dai is from vietnam national costume and “evolved alongside Vietnam, moving from regal to practical, from humble to high fashion, and back again,” says Vietnam Travel.

Gender and age stereotypes notwithstanding, the elegant ao dai flatters men and women, young and old.

Story

The history of ao dai dates back to 1744 when Vietnam was divided into two territories – Inner Earth and Outer Earth. To distinguish his people, Lord Nguyen Phúc Khoát of Inner Land instructed his subjects to wear a button-front robe with trousers. This five-part dress is considered the inspiration for modern ao dai.

In the 1930s, the dress was simplified into two parts by Vietnamese artist Le Mur Nguyen Cat Tuong. Although it was reluctantly received at first, it quickly became popular when urban women started wearing the contemporary version of this traditional dress.

Taking into account that the ao dai was not suitable for the fields or the factory, it was reserved for professional appearances and special occasions. According to the country’s official tourism website, high school girls are required to wear the dress at least one day a week.

Over the years, several modern designers have explored creative avenues in ao dai, adapting the dress to less formal settings as well.
