LVMH Mot Hennessy Louis Vuitton: Fashion & Leather Goods June 11, 2021 LV x NBA Pre-Fall 2021, a tribute to pop culture, fashion and basketball
Louis Vuitton and the National Basketball Association (NBA) continue their dialogue of stories, heritage and creative memories with a pre-fall 2021 collection from Louis Vuitton Homme artistic director Virgil Abloh. This second collaboration between the fashion house and the professional basketball league is inspired by the codes of the 90s, the golden age of sport.
This pre-collection is a transversal tribute to pop culture, fashion and sport as Virgil Abloh celebrates the values of brotherhood and universality. Louis Vuitton’s artistic director invited American designer Don Crawley to create several pieces, including a jacket, shorts and a Keepall adorned with basketball iconography, as well as iconic basketball and hoop objects.
Virgil Abloh designed the new LVxNBA collection as a complete wardrobe for an NBA player, covering all the key moments of his lifestyle – travel, game and press conference. For travel, a theme long synonymous with Louis Vuitton, casual casualwear pieces bounce back in style. A quilted jacket and matching pants are adorned with Louis Vuitton’s signature floral motif. A hoodie and shorts are saturated with the LV logo, while technical parkas and functional pants are perfect for nomadic athletes. For game days, jackets, shirts and shorts merge the Louis Vuitton and NBA codes, with multicolored graphic letters in typographies borrowed from the various NBA teams. The Maison’s logo is reinvented as a university badge for the shorts. The pieces are more formal for the press conference in order, including suits inspired by the 90s and a black coat with square lines and a leather bomber jacket reminiscent of the legendary basketball jackets.
Already featured in the first collection, the bags are adorned with the NBA badge in new iterations. There are ball shaped clutch bags and sports bags with mesh details inspired by basketball nets. A new line of grained leather bags is designed to evoke the texture of the iconic orange ball, available both in a vintage version in natural colors and in a black model with patch. The famous Keepall in black embossed Monogram leather comes with red python inlays and straps.
The shoes are transformed into a pre-match with sandals decorated with letters and a Monogram derby. Monogrammed ankle boots pay homage to court dress codes, and fur mules represent the vibe of the press conference. The jewelry includes extra-large chain necklaces that echo jewelry worn by players in the 1990s. A ring adorned with the LVxNBA logos mimics the iconic league championship rings. In a full lifestyle spirit, we find a Monogram wool and cashmere blanket and cushion, adorned with a hand-sewn letter.
The ultimate emblem of this second LVxNBA drop is a full-size (29.5 inch) basketball, plus a small collectible version (5.11 inch), filled with a backboard mounted basketball hoop that takes over a famous Louis Vuitton trunk. The limited edition sneakers, designed with the House’s meticulous craftsmanship, are produced by Wilson Sporting Goods, the official supplier of game balls to the NBA. They will be inaugurated during the 75th anniversary season of the league in 2021-2022. Each piece features the Louis Vuitton logo and the NBA brand. The large models are adorned with an embossed Louis Vuitton Monogram motif. All bullets are made from a premium composite material that emulates the leather traditionally used for Louis Vuitton luggage. The grain of the leather for the rest of the collection is also that of traditional sneakers.
