New Jersey consignment store urges locals to double take
Many students at Montclair State University try to showcase their best fashion assets when taking classes or spending time with their classmates. However, it can be difficult for college students to be both durable and fashionable on a budget. Double Take Luxury Consignment Boutique in Short Hills, New Jersey, does just that, with the goal of giving people high-end fashion they can afford.
Double Take Luxury Consignment Boutique immerses locals in a high fashion environment with an intimate shopping experience. Jimmy Choo, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Tory Burch sit on a shoe shelf. Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Gucci cling to the rack as customers slide the hangers onto the metal bars. The neatly organized displays feature a wide variety of designers, all of whom are logged by locals in the community.
Double Take CEO and Founder Marci Robins Kessler was inspired to start her own consignment store after failing to find good options in her community.
“I worked in fashion sales at [New York City]. When you work in the garment industry you pile up a lot of clothes, so I was looking to purge my closet, ”Kessler said. “I walked into a consignment store and hated it. I put everything back in my car and came home and said to my husband, “I’m going to open my own consignment store. It was in 1991.
Since then, Kessler has renamed the store to give shoppers a more modern experience. Kessler remodeled the store in August 2020 to give the space a fresher feel and worked on building relationships with shippers and customers.
“Customer service is the key,” Kessler said. “If I needed my dress closed, I would like someone to help me.”
Rachel Tressitt, the store’s regional manager, also believes in providing customers with a personal shopping experience.
“A lot of staff know [customers] by name, they know their size and know what they like and dislike, ”Tressitt said. “It gives a small business a very close connection with customers. “
The boutique also has a team that authenticates fashion pieces before the boutique presents them for sale. Once the team has checked the part, the price is fixed. The team takes many aspects into consideration when authenticating a part, says Kessler.
“We have a very good authentication process in terms of threading, type of leather [and] the hardware, ”Kessler said. “It makes customers feel safe and there are so many fools out there. “
While some of the more sought-after pieces can still be a bit pricey for students, the store has layaway options for shoppers. Students can find a great designer piece and put it on hold until they can pay for the full article.
Tressitt explains that the store also has annual sales where students can get their hands on designer must-haves.
“We usually do the end of season sales twice a year,” Tressitt said. “Our end of season winter sale is in February and our end of season summer sale is in August.”
Buyers can also sign up for the store’s rewards program and use the in-store and online rewards. For every dollar spent by a buyer, he receives one point. Throughout the year, the store offers double point promotions to allow customers to earn additional rewards and offers different levels of points in which buyers can apply to their purchases.
Tressitt says the rewards program is an enjoyable experience for customers and that they can’t go wrong.
“Buyers love it,” Tressitt said. “It gives them a little gift for being a loyal customer and makes it fun for them. It’s a win-win.
Locals can visit Double Take Luxury Consignment Boutique Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Students can also book an appointment online if they want to become a consignee and sell items at the store.
