Vivienne Westwood RED LABEL x Levi’s 501 Collab, Collection

From designer vodka to ASICS sneakers, Vivienne Westwood’s collaborative drops combine recreation and high fashion like no one else and her latest bond with Levi continues.
The Vivienne Westwood RED LABEL x Levi’s 501 collaboration is the next chapter in Levi’s Japan’s “Denim de Mirai ~DENIM PROJECT~” series, which emphasizes contemporary taste for upcycling by reviving old Levi’s pieces in new silhouettes.
RED LABEL, launched in 1993, is a womenswear sub-label that has mostly fallen into disuse, except in Japan, where Westwood’s proto-punk clothing is still in great demand.
Dame Viv follows Naomi Osaka and 3.1 Phillip Lim as they breathe new life into Levi’s denim, reinventing their pre-loved garments through Westwood’s punk look.
The result is a five-piece collection consisting of a bucket hat, a tote bag, a shirt, the inimitable 501 jeans and a corset in delicate denim, a Westwood signature crafted in dyed cotton with Levi’s indigo.
Chaos comes through the collection’s mishmash of graphic prints randomly layered on each patchwork piece, including red hearts and phrases like “UNISEX”, “TEACH ON THE GO”, “BE NICE TO YOURSELF” .
The beauty of these whimsical designs is that they work as standalone statement pieces or cohesive as a complementary set when worn together – you decide.
Unfortunately for us in the US, it will be difficult to get our hands on this collection unless you are willing to pay for a plane ticket to Japan or use a proxy service.
The Vivienne Westwood RED LABEL x Levi’s 501 collection arrives March 23 at the dedicated RED LABEL store in Isetan Shinjuku.
Hopefully a larger release happens sooner rather than later. I pray that I can live my carefree summer in a Westwood denim corset.
